Hey SoS!
This is it. It all comes down to this last week.
Well, sort of - SoS will continue into August and beyond, but our main “flagship” Thursday gatherings will wrap up on the 30th!
I hope you’ve learned a lot this summer. As I keep saying, our objectives at SoS have been to:
Get you noticed (improve your resume, public and traditional)
Pass the interview (interview prep)
Gain skills relevant to on the job success
But I also hope you were able to develop professional relationships that will go beyond summer - and possibly that you made some friends as well 🎉. Indeed, meeting new people is one of the great things of being an intern, and I hope you were able to replicate that somewhat w/SoS.
Shipping a product is hard! Especially when there’s no structure around you to keep yourself accountable. It’s a tricky process, but I hope you’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for project management and how important the “non-technical” skills are for shipping. Success or not, exercising those project management muscles will come in handy in the future 💪
Get those demos ready, deploy something to production, even it’s barely more than Hello World, and I’ll see you Thursday for, what I’m hoping, will be a demo-fest!
After Thursday
After Thursday, SoS will continue to meet, but in an informal manner. We’ll keep the following meetups recurring until they either complete their objective or the organizers have to drop off:
Interview Prep - Tuesday 5PM Pacific
Study Group - Wednesday 5PM Pacific (for Designing Data Intensive Applications)
Additionally, I’ll try to organize an occasional bonus Thursday meeting. It’ll probably be a lot like the one from last week, where we had guests visit us:
The video is unlisted (I’m making a small edit, and will check in with our guests if it’s ok to make the video public thereafter), so click on the above link if you’re at all interested in learning about what a career in ML might look like!
We had Sean, Minh, and Vijay visit us (from Google, Cisco, and Cisco respectively) and they provided a view into the ML world that might not always be accessible to people who are just starting out.
In the future, I’m thinking we’ll do more “Thursday hangouts” like this, where we get a guest to talk about their jobs and explain it to students to get a more holistic understanding of what it feels like to work in industry. If these continue, I expect them to happen on Thursday at 5PM Pacific or Friday at 5PM BST (aka 9AM Pacific) - and those announcements will be made via Discord.
And if you want to see those continue, please “vote” on Discord by reacting this message in the #announcements channel!
Alright - that’s all for now! Hope to see you Thursday for a demo day!
And if you haven’t shipped something yet and are looking to salvage your summer - here’s a guide by Nick (published earlier today!) that shows you how to build a ToDo app in under an hour (possibly even in minutes):

See you Thursday!
☀️🚢
