Week 11 - Monday
Hey all!
Hope you’re getting your week off right - and in case you missed it, check out last Thursday’s Guest Presentation w/@swyx:
I learned a ton - some highlights:
Excellent project idea: clone open source libraries (like a small JS library) and tag the creator on Twitter when you get to your v0. Very high chance the creator will look at what you did and give you a review - and maybe ask you to contribute to the main open source project!
Job Hunt tips
Tradeoff between shotgun vs focused approach. Pick one - Shawn, picked the latter (9 high quality applications as opposed to 250+ resume drops), but this was because he was learning in public, he could build relationships w/ people
The importance of having an accountability group (the hunt usually takes anywhere from 2-12 months! - and motivation is a big part of this)
How to structure your daily routine during Job Hunting
How to use your public writing to help get interviews
Habits - and how to implement all the ideas that he’s talked about
But seriously, just go watch the video and get inspired about projects and the job hunt - as well as learning in public!
Announcements
As summer progresses, we’ve found a good rhythm:
Tuesdays Interview Prep (5PM Pacific) - join us tomorrow! John will be presenting his first Data Structure talk!
Thursday Meeting (5PM Pacific)
Friday Meeting (9AM Pacific)
We’re adding Study Groups and the first one will be around the book “Designing Data Intensive Applications”. The tentative plan is to kick it off next Wednesday at… you guessed it, 5PM Pacific.
If you’re interested in reading this book (which is the best book I’ve seen that goes over modern at-scale architectures in an easy to read manner) - the join the #data-intensive channel on Discord!
Note that our Thursday/Friday meetings are scheduled to run until the end of July. In August, we’ll probably transition to a cozier “demos on Thursday in Discord” approach, as opposed to a formal presentation each week.
#30DaysOfShipping
The goal of #30DaysOfShipping is simply to have no zero days! You don’t have to finish a feature or get something out there - just aim for a tiny bit of progress each day and you’ll make tremendous strides!
And there’s no shame in having to pause and restart. Totally ok if you go dark for days, if not for weeks at a time. I’ve done both 🙈
If you guys recall, I had a pretty disastrous first attempt at #30DaysOfShipping (fell off the map after day 17). Well - no matter - guess who’s back??
😎
Alright, remember to focus on getting the ball rolling via small actions, go watch the presentation from @swyx if you need some more motivation, and make sure to have fun!
☀️🚢
Let’s ship,
Phil
